Data Recovery Guru seems to work as advertised, recovering every file I’ve thrown at it so far. However, there are a couple of glaring omissions in the product.
Probably the biggest problem I have is that it is impossible to save search results. While the File menu does include both “Save” and “Save As…”, both are grayed out and thus do nothing. So why is this a problem? I am currently trying to recover data from an external drive that is no longer being used. Thus, no further changes will occur, and a saved scan would remain accurate indefinitely. The scan worked very well, but after waiting well over 24 hours for it to find all the deleted files on this 500GB drive, I had only recovered a few, when a squirmy nine-month-old helped me accidentally quit the app. There was no dialog, no warning; it simply quit, taking my scan with it. When I relaunched the app, the default screen returned and I had to start over from scratch, waiting another 24+ hours for it to produce the exact same results.
In short, the app is very effective, but the lack of a “Save Results”—a feature found in many competing products—is a major oversight.
